Coffee Shop in Pacific Beach That is Committed to Sustainability

At Glazed, we’re a coffee shop in Pacific Beach that is committed to sustainability. Thankfully, environmental friendliness is becoming more prominent, as there’s an upward trend towards sustainability and healthy eating. In fact, a study by Purdue University found that 2/3 of restaurant customers are more willing to support a business that uses environmentally friendly practices. Many professionals have been working towards making their restaurants more eco-friendly by reducing waste, carbon emissions, or energy consumption.

Today we’ll talk about how we’ve worked towards reducing the environmental impact with our coffee products. When it comes to most restaurants and cafés, coffee is packaged with the intent to preserve the coffee beans for as long as possible. The packaging most likely uses plastic, aluminum, and mixed materials.

How Do We Improve Our Sustainability?

We’ve partnered with Caffè Vergnano, who managed to develop eco-friendly containers for the restaurant industry! Most restaurants and coffee shops use packaging materials made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a plastic that’s resistant, light, and acts as a barrier against humidity. It’s suitable for contact with food and is highly recyclable. Caffè Vergnano takes their sustainability one step further. Their coffee bean packaging for the hospitality industry is made from 50% recycled rPET and 50% virgin PET.

What Does This Mean?

As we know, recycling is one of the best ways to reduce environmental impact, and rPET comes from recycles plastic water bottles. The process takes plastic bottles, breaks them down into flakes, and separates the core PET ingredient. It uses 50% less energy and keeps the plastic bottle out of the landfill. The material has the same performance as 100% virgin plastic and will optimally preserve the coffee. There are no limitations or compromises. It’s an incredible way to cut non-renewable plastic use in half, reducing the production phase’s CO2 emissions.
